NYC: What started in 2011 as the Reggae, Rhythm & Blues (RR&B) Festival with R&B hit machine Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds as the headline artiste at Roy Wilkins in Queens, NY has mushroomed into Groovin’ In The Park, New York City’s premier summer concert.
In just five years, the annual festival, made famous for creating seismic jolts with the superlative quality of artists booked each year has provided first class entertainment for thousands of fans in the New York metro region.
2011 – The inaugural festival featured Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Monica, Movado, soca king Machel Montano HD, Tarrus Riley, I-Octane, John Holt and Leroy Sibbles. The Doctor Beenieman was honored by festival organisers for over three decades of outstanding contribution to the reggae/dancehall industry.
2012 – Grammy Award winning R&B legend Gladys Knight, Boyz 11 Men, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, Beres Hammond and dancehall King Beenie Man.
2013 – R&B icon Patti LaBelle, Tank, Ginuwine, Tyrese, Sanchez, Barrington Levy, Steel Pulse, Half Pint and Queen Ifrica.
2014 – Beres Hammond and Air Supply were joined by Chronixx, Reggae Queen Marcia Griffiths and friends Judy Mowatt, Bob Andy, Ken Boothe, Tony Gregory and the 809 Band.
Thanks to meticulous planning and delivery on promise, Groovin’ in the Park now has a huge concert fans base who look forward to each year’s production. The superbly professional technical standards that the festival has set for executing this extravaganza has re-defined expectations for all other music festivals in the region. After a modest 6,000 patrons in 2011, the festival had its biggest outing in 2014 when it pulled a record 20,000 patrons.
“Our primary aim each year is to deliver to the concert stage the best available talent that Reggae and R&B music has to offer. We focus on quality – from the performers, the ambiance in the park, production, security, stage, light and sound. We have built our brand on executing what we advertise and delivering to patrons what they expect and much, much more” said Groovin’ In The Park founder and CEO Christopher Roberts.
This year’s dazzling lineup includes Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter Michael Bolton, who has sold more than 53 million albums and singles worldwide. Bolton will be joined by R&B sensation Billy Ocean alongside reggae icons like Morgan Heritage, Coco Tea, Luciano, Stitchie and Capleton.
