Award-Winning Illustrators Bryan Collier and Frank Morrison Featured In House of Art Gallery’s “The Jam Session” Exhibition Brooklyn-based House of Art Gallery will host exhibit featuring the works of celebrated children’s book illustrators Bryan Collier and Frank Morrison, September 12 – October 10, 2015.
(Brooklyn, NY) – House of Art Gallery will continue its tradition of bringing fine art and artists to the community with its latest exhibit, “The Jam Session” featuring two decorated children’s book illustrators – Bryan Collier and Frank Morrison. The exhibit will run Saturday, September 12 through October 10, 2015.
“The Jam Session” will feature original artwork from I Got the Rhythm by Connie Morrison and illustrated by Frank Morrison, along with original artwork from Trombone Shorty by Troy Andrews, illustrated by Bryan Collier.
Collier is a three-time winner of the Caldecott Honor, which is the highest honor a picture book illustrators can receive and was also a U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2014. Both he and Morrison have won the Coretta Scott King and NAACP awards. They’ve both have also been on the NY Times Best Seller’s list with the books they’ve illustrated.
While both artists also create works outside of children’s illustrations, gallery owner Richard Beavers said this exhibition solely focuses on their illustrative works. And the event presents a rare opportunity for their works to be viewed outside of the pages of the books in which they reside.
These are two accomplished picture book illustrators with more than 20 titles between them,” said Richard Beavers. “ In the New York area there aren’t any galleries that have provided them a platform to exhibit their illustrative works. This exhibition is a concept that HOA Gallery has contemplated for quite some time now. The exhibit also provides an opportunity for youth to celebrate art from their perspective.

“Children of color and other ethnicities will be able to come out with their families and see images of black children being depicted in children’s books this type of diversity has not always existed in the illustrative world of children’s books,” Beavers said.
Beginning with two artist that are represented through HOA Gallery, Beavers is looking to do an annual illustrators’ exhibit. “This is just the beginning, interests will grow and next year, we’ll create an opportunity for additional illustrators to participate.”
