MAAFA …. THE WAY OUT IS BACK THROUGH
SHADES OF MEMORIES
“EXPERIENCE THE JOURNEY OF OUR ANCESTORS”
The MAAFA is a Kiswahili term for “terrible occurrence” or “great disaster”. It refers to the Black Holocaust when millions of Africans died during the journey of captivity from the west coast of Africa to the shores of America, known as the Middle Passage.
2015 marks the 21st year the ministry of St. Paul Community Baptist Church has shown reverence to, recognized and honored the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade through its Commemoration of The MAAFA.
If you have never experienced this moving tribute expressed annually in our sanctuary through renowned teaching and drama, its core goal is to take not only our community, but the world at large, on a walk down memory lane to get a clear understanding of who the African in America is and why he/she are who they are, how we can reverse the thought patterns that have been ingrained in our psyches, in some cases paralyzing some of us, from generations foregone and still remain present in us today.
From February 25th thru the 28th Mount Pisgah Baptist Church will be presenting MAAFA: “Shades of Memories.” Written by Kenya Cagle and directed by Michele Hawkins-Jones, “Shades of Memories” aim to heal the wounds of the Middle Passage via drama and dance.
