About The Music Research Lab

The Music Research Lab aka TMRL was established in nineteen eighty-three by Phillip Benn while studying music and radio broadcasting at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. After coming to realize the importance of music to the emotional and spiritual well-being of individuals the goal was to compile a large collection of music and provide skillfully created mix cassettes of Classic Soul, Jazz, R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Rap, Soca, Gospel, Latin, Haitian, African, Reggaeton, House and Oldies.

Phillip has been involved in music from the early age of thirteen as a Disc-Jockey, learning to “String-Up Sound Systems” and intern on stage crews. As a teen Phillip was a folklore drummer competing in the nation “Best Village Competition” in Trinidad and Tobago and then went on to join Sound Revolution Band as a percussionist. “Sound Rev” which the fans nick named the band rose to popularity under the leadership of Colin Lucas who had studied in Jamaica and had played with Inner Circle, bringing all the intricate techniques of Reggae to our band, which opened opportunities for work on many recordings.
